Connect to your bank using the FinTS protocol. Your credentials stay on your device — the connection runs directly between you and your bank's server.
FinTS (Financial Transaction Services) is the standardized German protocol for online banking communication. Formerly known as HBCI (Home Banking Computer Interface), it was developed by the German Banking Industry Committee (Die Deutsche Kreditwirtschaft) and has been the backbone of secure online banking in Germany for over two decades. Wagyu uses this protocol to establish a direct, encrypted connection between your iPhone and your bank's FinTS server — no intermediary service required.
Unlike screen-scraping solutions or third-party aggregation services that sit between you and your bank, Wagyu's FinTS implementation communicates directly with your bank's server infrastructure. The protocol uses standardized message formats and strong encryption to ensure that every request and response is transmitted securely. This means your portfolio data travels over a single, direct channel — the same channel your bank's own online banking portal relies on.
Because FinTS is an official banking standard rather than a reverse-engineered workaround, the connection is stable, well-documented, and maintained by the banking industry itself. You benefit from a protocol that banks actively support and update, giving you reliable access to your securities portfolio without depending on fragile scraping techniques that can break whenever a bank redesigns its website.
Once connected to your bank via FinTS, Wagyu automatically retrieves your securities depot and identifies every position it contains. Individual stocks, ETFs, mutual funds, and bonds are all recognized and imported into your portfolio. Each holding is matched against its ISIN or WKN identifier, so Wagyu can immediately pull in current market prices, historical performance data, and accurate cost basis information without any manual entry on your part.
The import process handles the nuances of German depot structures, including multiple sub-depots, fractional shares, and different settlement currencies. Whether you hold a single global ETF or a diversified mix of DAX stocks, international funds, and fixed-income securities, Wagyu maps every position correctly. You see your entire portfolio — with real-time valuations and gain/loss calculations — seconds after connecting, rather than spending hours manually adding each position.
Wagyu also keeps your portfolio in sync with your bank. When you buy or sell securities through your broker, those changes are reflected the next time you refresh your FinTS connection. New positions appear automatically, sold positions are archived with their realized gain or loss, and adjusted quantities are updated across your dashboard. Your portfolio tracking stays accurate without any ongoing maintenance effort.
When you enter your banking credentials in Wagyu, they are stored exclusively in the secure keychain on your device. They are never transmitted to Wagyu's servers, never stored in any cloud database, and never accessible to anyone other than you. The FinTS connection is initiated directly from your iPhone to your bank's server — Wagyu's infrastructure is not part of that communication path at all. There is no relay, no proxy, and no data passing through any third-party system.
This architecture is fundamentally different from most portfolio tracking apps, which typically require you to hand over your banking credentials to a cloud service that then connects to your bank on your behalf. In those models, a third party has full access to your login data and your financial information. With Wagyu, the trust boundary is simple: your device talks to your bank, and that is the entire data flow. No company — including Wagyu — can see your credentials or intercept your portfolio data in transit.
This privacy-first approach also means there is no single point of failure outside your control. If a cloud aggregation service suffers a data breach, every user's banking credentials are potentially exposed. With Wagyu's direct-connection model, your credentials exist only in one place — your device's encrypted keychain — and the attack surface is reduced to your personal device security. You maintain full sovereignty over your financial data at every step.
Wagyu supports FinTS connections to a wide range of German banks and brokers. Major institutions like Deutsche Bank, Commerzbank, Postbank, and the Sparkassen network are all accessible, as are the cooperative Volksbanken and Raiffeisenbanken. Online brokers including ING, comdirect, and Consorsbank are supported as well. If your bank offers a FinTS/HBCI interface for securities depot access — which the vast majority of German banks do — Wagyu can connect to it.
The FinTS standard, originally introduced as HBCI in 1998 and evolved through multiple versions, is deeply embedded in the German banking landscape. It covers not only account balance and transaction retrieval but also securities depot queries, which Wagyu leverages specifically for portfolio import. The protocol supports multiple authentication methods including PIN/TAN procedures, so you can use the same login flow you already know from your bank's online banking — including chipTAN, pushTAN, and photoTAN where supported by your bank.
Wagyu automatically discovers the correct FinTS server endpoint for your bank based on its BLZ (Bankleitzahl), so setup is straightforward. You select your bank, enter your online banking credentials, complete your TAN verification, and your depot is imported. There is no complex configuration, no manual server URLs to look up, and no technical knowledge required. The entire process takes under a minute from start to a fully populated portfolio view.
Everything Wagyu does, one topic per page.
